![]() Through some form of electronic or social osmosis, the CEO will learn of a competitor employing some ingenious grift and then seek to apply that grift to suit his own purposes. Shakedown: Hawaii quickly establishes a pattern. ![]() It’s a blundering and blunt-force path of destruction. ![]() Newly conscious of the outside world, the CEO, his idiot son Scooter, and his South American henchman learn of every imaginable scheme 2019 has to offer and venture to wreak havoc on every animate and inanimate object in the vicinity. The CEO (who I don’t think is named!) awakens from what I assumed was two solid decades of martinis and daytime television to discover his coffers are nearing empty. Shakedown: Hawaii is what might happen if Retro City Rampage sold out, and that is very much the point.Īs the slovenly CEO of Feeble Multinational, a proprietor of VHS rentals and cabs and other things no one uses anymore, you’re an ideal position to disrupt the state of Hawaiian commerce. To fuel its open-world crime syndicate, Vblank Entertainment trades Retro City Rampage’s arcane and overt 8-bit references for the more relatable ornamentation of a corporate hellscape. Shakedown: Hawaii is keenly aware of this wave of social decay and, rather than fight the tide, enables players to do everything imaginable to keep it rolling. If you have found yourself blankly paying for some kind of service (or absence of service) you don’t quite understand, you are not alone. However, we’re unsure of the Switch and 3DS prices, so stay tuned for updates.Sponsored content. #SHAKEDOWN HAWAII HOTLINE MIAMI PORTABLE#This game is great for a portable device but may quickly become boring for console gamers. It’ll keep you entertained in spurts but may get repetitive after an hour or so. Shakedown Hawaii’s gorgeous art, mesmerising music and short mission structure make is a great palette cleanser when you’re not in the mood to invest too much into a game. The missions are simple enough for you to complete them while on autopilot, and the business management part of it is so guided, that you don’t really have to make any decisions besides pressing ‘Next.’ Most of the cutscenes are recycled picture-text boxes. However, despite its great art and writing, Shakedown Hawaii tends to get a bit repetitive later on. For example, the rich business tycoon who wants to take over your business looks exactly like you pictured it in your head. Characters are brilliantly crafted, with attention to detail on expressions, stereotypes and parodies. The artists have done well to capture the 80’s aesthetic of the game. ![]() All this, with catchy retro-synth in the background, reminiscent of Hotline Miami. ![]() The mission structure is perfect for a short gaming session. A semi-auto locking system makes shooting much easier, but the melee is way more fun to use as you can send NPC’s flying across the screen with a baseball bat. The gameplay is similar to that of GTA: Chinatown Wars top-down camera with inverted directions while driving. He then proceeds to acquire property, destroy merchandise, or do whatever it takes to own the island. They even parody the gaming industry with a mission around “VR is the future of gaming.” In almost every cutscene, the CEO ignores his advisor, only to take advice from ‘get rich quick’ gurus, the news and even blatant advertising. In a GTA-esque fashion, the writers parody current affairs and market trends. #SHAKEDOWN HAWAII HOTLINE MIAMI SERIES#The story mode is a series of short missions between hilariously written cutscenes. And then there’s the Consultant, he’s the man who does all the dirty work when it comes to taking over cartel businesses. You also play as the CEO’s unemployed son, a DJ who hasn’t gotten a gig in years. ![]()
